Ayurveda Tantra
(Technical presentation and knowledge building in Ayurveda)

Introduction :

In this context word ‘Tantra’ refers to the perfect technical presentation in Ayurveda. But ‘Tantra’ also means ‘Tanyate vistaryate jnanamanena iti tantram’, that which expands awareness or Consciousness to its fullness. Tantra embodies two Sanskrit words tanoti (Expands) and Trayoti (Liberates). Tantras (Agamas) are revelations and the practical aspect of Vedic traditions (Nigamas) in India. Tantra is again a combination of two Sanskrit words ‘Tattva’ means, the science of cosmic principles and ‘Mantra’ which means, the science of mystic sounds and cosmic vibrations.

Ayurveda emphasizes experience and verification as the ultimate criteria to validate a knowledge system. This is the classical interpretation of Veda that denotes sattA (existence), jJAna (knowledge), vicAra (inquiry) and LAbha (attainment).

Observation: All Indian knowledge systems emphatically declare that experience is the true basis of knowledge. Therefore knowledge is experiential (anubhava). Experiences have to be validated by the process of verification.Verified experiences are valid and constitute the true source of knowledge. Experience is of two types – valid (yathArtha anubhava) or invalid (ayathArtha anubhava).Technically, the understanding gained out of rigorous observation is called as pramA (valid cognition) and which is gained out of improper observation is apramA (invalid cognition). This is indicated by sattA, meaning existence, one of the meaning of the root from which the word Veda is derived.

Presentation: Experience gained by observations have to be presented in a proper way so that others can verify it. Ayurvedic texts have laid down guidelines for the effective presentation of technical information. The perfect technical presentation is called as a tantra. This is done with the help of tantra guNas. A good presentation is quintessential and unambiguous. This is indicated by vetti, meaning to know clearly, one of the meaning of the root from which veda is derived.

Analysis: Before attempting to verify, one has to properly understand a technical presentation. In other words, a technical presentation has to be analyzed and understood properly first. Otherwise the process of verification will be defeating its purpose. This is indicated by vichAra, meaning to analyse, one of the meaning of the root from which the Veda is derived.

Verification: Verification adds value to the knowledge and in due course of time, generates a body of knowledge that has been rigorously tested again and again. Ayurveda distinguishes between jJAna (understanding) and VijJana (experience). Ayurvedic texts say that one needs both understanding and experience and neither understanding nor experience by itself can lead to complete knowledge. Therefore the student is advised to first gain understanding by study of authoritative texts and then conform the understanding personally through the process of parIkSA (investigation). This is indicated by the word LAbha, means to obtain, one of the root from which the word Veda is derived.

Ayurveda predictions about patient’s disease conditions are based on extension of logic and sometimes pure intuition, which is beyond the logic. According to Ayurveda and yogic science there are many explanations for intuition and higher cognitive function that one has to develop. The terms like ‘Gut feeling’ and ‘intuition’ sometimes suit for metaphysical rather than neurobiological cognition. This is sometimes a powerful tool for advanced Nadi Analysis (Pulse diagnosis) in Ayurveda. Ancient Vaidya (Physician) families used Jyothisha (Astrology), Mantra Shastra (Science of Mystic sounds and cosmic vibrations) and Tantra shastra (Science of diety worship, which is nothing but focusing on personified cosmic energy principles) for supporting Ayurveda practices.
